Do HGV drivers need a DBS check?
Often yes. Many haulage firms, 3PLs and client sites request a Basic DBS check before you drive for them — especially where you access secure yards, retail DCs or contracts that mandate screening.
Your HGV licence and Driver CPC are separate from DBS. Passing a medical or CPC does not replace a criminal record check if the employer asks for one.
Basic vs Enhanced for logistics roles
Line-haul and general goods driving usually need Basic. Enhanced is uncommon unless the role is eligible in law (for example certain passenger or vulnerable-person work). If a recruiter asks for Enhanced without a clear eligible role, ask them which registered body will request it — you cannot self-apply for Enhanced.
Client sites may set a higher bar
Some supermarket, airport or government contracts require specific check levels or recent certificates. Confirm with your employer before you apply. Start FREE for job applicants if you only need to confirm the level; a Basic DBS itself has the official DBS fee.

Do I need Enhanced DBS for artic driving?
Usually no. Enhanced is for eligible roles. Standard artic / trunking work typically uses Basic if a DBS is requested at all.
How long does an HGV DBS take?
Most Basic checks finish the same day after submission, then the certificate is posted. Build postage into your start date if needed.
Can agencies see my DBS Update Service status?
If you subscribe to the Update Service for an eligible certificate type and give permission, employers can check status online. Ask your agency what they accept.
