Do security guards need a DBS check?
Yes — screening is standard across door supervision, guarding and related roles. The level of DBS depends on the licence and the employer. Many SIA-related routes and contracts involve criminal record checks as part of fit-and-proper assessments.
Some roles only need a Basic certificate that you can apply for yourself. Others sit under an employer or registered body and may require a higher level where the law allows.
Basic, Standard or Enhanced?
Basic shows unspent convictions and conditional cautions — available to any individual. Standard and Enhanced show more detail and are only available for eligible roles, requested through a registered body (not DIY).
Always follow the wording in your SIA application pack or employer contract. If they say Enhanced, they must arrange it through an eligible route — see our Enhanced DBS page for organisation options.

FAQs
Is a DBS check the same as an SIA licence?
No. The SIA licence is a separate permission to work in certain security roles. A DBS check is a criminal record check that may be required as part of licensing or employment screening.
Can I apply for Enhanced DBS myself for security work?
No. Enhanced checks must be requested for an eligible role through a registered body. If your role only needs Basic, you can apply yourself — Basic has an official DBS fee.
How long does a security DBS take?
Basic checks often complete the same day after submission. Build postage into your licence or start-date plan if you need the paper certificate.
Do door supervisors always need Enhanced DBS?
Requirements depend on the SIA route and employer. Do not assume — follow the current application guidance for your licence type.
